Beauty Redefined

Beauty Redefined is a photo project on Black hairstyles in the US, specifically box braids, cornrows, and passion twists. It uses portraits of myself as the subject wearing traditional and contemporary hairstyles that possess a rich history of struggle, culture, and perseverance within the Black community. Because the personal is political, and to better understand the theme of identity as well as to investigate my own beliefs surrounding beauty, I decided to use myself as the subject for this project.

For me, my hair and my photographs work together to give me a voice, a way to express and explore myself as well as challenge harmful narratives.
